My own work as a speaker, presenter, and spokesman for IBM has a lot in common with Khun Chaiyos’ work.  I remember when he showed me a puzzle he used in his class as a way of getting people to open their minds, start thinking, and solve problems outside of their usual range.  I am always looking for such devices to get people to think and learn.

“I met Ajarn Chaiyos on a flight from Bangkok to Manila.  He was taking a class in business ethics, and wanted an American perspective on a particular issue.  He was full of curiosity about the subject – partly because my American perspective was rather different from the Thai answer.  We both learned from the ensuing discussion.

Being a great instructor is not about of having all the answers.  Rather, one must be able to ask the right questions, because that is what your students have, and that’s how you need to approach information sharing.  The curious mind I have gotten to know with Ajarn Chaiyos is one I have grown to respect in the continuing friendship we have enjoyed.  Surely lifelong teaching must depend on an attitude of lifelong learning, and I have learned a lot from him.

Aside from teaching professionally, I have also seen the way he inspires his young son to be curious.  For example, he thought that young Pun might be more interested in learning English if he spent some time getting to know a farang who spoke little Thai.  I think Khun Chaiyos must have a focus on learning.

I have not had the pleasure of seeing Ajarn Chaiyos in action – let the other writers speak to that experience – but I know the methodical way his mind works, and I am sure he must be an interesting instructor.”
